Omnidrive shuts down

Online storage solutions have become popular for people wanting to backup or store data.

I’ve tried a dozen or so in the past year. One of them I rather liked was Omnidrive.

Don’t worry about following the link, as the company appears to have shut down and the domain is for sale.

I never received notice of the pending closure, so had no opportunity to retrieve the few files I had uploaded there.

If I had been a power user with hundreds or thousands of files there I’d now be extremely peeved.

The sudden unexplained demise of Omnidrive highlights the risk of using so-called web 2.0 companies for mission-critical solutions.

I had a webmail provider (30gigs) shut down in similar mysterious circumstances.

The lesson I’ve learned from this is to stick with reputable brands. I’ll still try start-ups, but my main mail account is now with Google and my main storage account is with Microsoft (Skydrive).

Some more about the Omnidrive story here and here.
