Who’s next to go?

The writs have been issued for the Gippsland by-election to be held on June 28, but why is there only one?

Talk was there’d be a “super Saturday” of by-elections to replace retiring Howard Government ministers who are now on the backbench, namely Peter Costello, Alexander Downer and Mark Vaile.

It’s better they quit politics than receive a substantial salary and accumulate superannuation for doing bugger all.

If they do follow Peter McGauran into a new occupation or retirement before the general election they have done a great disservice to the taxpayers.

The cost of multiple by-elections doesn’t bear thinking about.
