The Twenty20 phenomenon

More than 60,000 people watched a Twenty20 game at the MCG last night between Australia and South Africa.

Commentators spoke about the youthfulness of the crowd.

There’s no doubt the “code” is entertaining, more so than 50-over matches. It’s not hard to envisage Twenty20 replacing one-day internationals.

There is a greater risk of more one-sided contests with Twenty20 matches. That could deter some potential fans, especially if ticket prices are high.

The appeal is non-stop action and the shorter timeframe.

Something which should be considered is playing the matches over two innings of 10 overs each. It would be nearly impossible for a team to be bowled out in 10 overs.

Going back to last night’s game, did anyone else see Cameron White flinch in the outfield?

Running in for a catch he lost sight of the ball in the lights, turned his back on it and covered his arse. Pretty ordinary for someone wearing Australian colors.

He should have put his body on the line of the ball to stop the boundary.
