Tax cuts for all

The Howard and Costello show hit the road yesterday promising $34 billion of income tax cuts. Workers on an average $50,000 a year were promised a weekly tax cut of $19 from July 1 rising to $34 over three years. A worker earning $100,000 would gain $21 a week, rising to $41 in three years.
Unsurprisingly, voters have reacted favorably, showing there may still be life in this election.
The story has made “front page” news on the News Ltd web sites and The West Australian, but not Fairfax.
The Age web site this morning preferred to lead with a mistake by John Howard on the level of official interest rates (he said they were 6.25 percent when they are actually 6.5).
Admittedly The Age did run the tax story online yesterday and I don’t know what’s on the front page of the paper edition today, but the focus on Howard’s minor gaffe while running a story about so-called attacks on Julia Gillard as the lead national item was a curious choice.
