Road safety

What is a safe speed limit for Australian conditions and what is the appropriate speed limit? Are these two attributes complementary or competitive.
The Office of Road Safety in Western Australia has released a discussion paper suggesting the speed limit on country roads be reduced from 110kmh to 100kmh. The suggestion is in response to the state’s escalating rural road toll.
It misses a few points however, like:
- The state’s population has increased and there has been greater traffic volumes on country roads;
- Distances are vast and time is money.
Anecdotal evidence shows a widespread lack of support for reducing the speed limit. People would prefer to see the government invest in road improvements, better driver education and an increased police presence to deter reckless drivers.
