The rise of T20 cricket

Twenty-twenty cricket (T20) promises to revolutionise cricket as we know it.

The game is fast and action packed. It’s finished in about the same time as a football match.

I think it’s good for the game. Instead of threatening test cricket, as some people have suggested, it could be the established game’s lifeline.

With attendances dwindling around the world, and standards dropping, test cricket has arguably never been weaker.

Fifty-over cricket has become boring and predictable. It also sucks up a whole day to watch. This version of the game is most at risk from T20.

I can envisage a national T20 league being established in Australia, comprising 12 or 14 club teams from across the country.

With likely average attendances of 20,000 people it will surpass the A League in terms of spectator appeal.
