Cooma snowboarder Torah Bright has won Australia’s first gold medal at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Aged 23, she comes from a Mormon family, doesn’t drink or do drugs, and apparently doesn’t even drink coffee.

While football codes stumble from crisis to calamity, Tiger Woods checks out from a sex addiction clinic and cricket struggles with ball eaters, it’s wonderful to see a polite young woman succeed at the Olympics.

Perhaps she didn’t do the dishes one night or forgot to feed the family cat.

They may as well be wearing whites.

It’s not Pakistan’s fault either. Australia used to wear canary yellow, but converted to the same green worn by Pakistan and very similar to South Africa’s green.

Countries that clash should be required to have an alternative uniform, eg Pakistan might wear predominantly white with green trim when playing in Australia.

Australia should have an alternative yellow strip to wear against Pakistan and South Africa.

The national boards are obviously not taking any action themselves on this issue, so the ICC should step in.

The game is fast and action packed. It’s finished in about the same time as a football match.

I think it’s good for the game. Instead of threatening test cricket, as some people have suggested, it could be the established game’s lifeline.

With attendances dwindling around the world, and standards dropping, test cricket has arguably never been weaker.

Fifty-over cricket has become boring and predictable. It also sucks up a whole day to watch. This version of the game is most at risk from T20.

I can envisage a national T20 league being established in Australia, comprising 12 or 14 club teams from across the country.

With likely average attendances of 20,000 people it will surpass the A League in terms of spectator appeal.

The Australian Racing Board must reassess the new whip rules at its meeting in Sydney tomorrow or risk a Spring Carnival shrouded with controversy, the Australian Jockeys’ Association has warned.

Leading jockeys Corey Brown and Damien Oliver will join Australian Jockeys’ Association representatives, including CEO Paul Innes, at the ARB meeting to present the AJA’s submission to have the rules altered in regards to the last 100 metres.

“Jockeys are very happy with the introduction of the padded whips, we’re even happy to limit the use of the whip prior to the last 100m, but the rules governing the whips use in the last 100m have to change,” Mr Innes said.

“Common sense has got to prevail at this ARB meeting.”

Mr Innes said the occupational health and safety risks to jockeys of the whip rules will form the basis of the AJA’s submission.

“In the dying stages of a race jockeys need to be concentrating entirely on their personal safety and the safety of their fellow jockeys, not worrying about calculating the number of times they’ve moved their whip.

“We can’t afford to have a jockey injured in a race fall because they’ve been more worried about breaking the rules than concentrating on the job at hand.”

The league needed a couple more years to consolidate, in my view, before adding more teams.

A lot has been achieved in a few short years. Some of that is now in jeopardy if the new clubs fail to do well.

Neither is likely to consistently attract home crowds of more than 10,000 people, especially if they’re struggling, and neither is likely to be a drawcard away unless they’re successful.

FFA should have waited a couple of years and then looked at adding extra clubs from Melbourne and Sydney.

And it would have honored an earlier commitment to give Victoria the next super rugby franchise if it could deliver the goods financially.

Instead, Victoria must now bid against western Sydney and the Gold Coast.

Melbourne is big enough to support a super rugby team. There is a small core of Victorians who like and follow rugby.

More significantly, there are thousands of expat Kiwis, Poms and South Africans who will embrace a Victorian club.

The Vics deserve to win, no argument. They have been the best side all season.

It’s a shame the game is being played at the Junction Oval, which has poor drainage. The MCG was unavailable because of the bushfire charity concert.

It highlights the need for Victorian cricket to have a permanent home that isn’t shared with football.

The Lake Oval at South Melbourne would have been perfect, but soccer got in first.

Maybe Windy Hill or Northcote. The Albert Ground is lovely, but too small to host major games.

South Africa’s reported threat to withdraw its five teams from Super 14 rugby in favor of a European competition is not a bad thing.

The South Africans have understandable issues with time zone differences and the cost of travel.

Those teams could easily be replaced by sides from Japan, Fiji, Western Samoa, Tonga and Victoria.

The Japanese and Pacific clubs would not be national sides because:

a) Some of their national team players would be listed with Australian and New Zealand franchises;

b) They could recruit players from anywhere in the world. The Japanese, in particular, could afford to field a quality line-up.

I can’t see the merit of encouraging Argentine clubs because the same travel and cost issues would exist as they do with South Africa.
